Firewise Workday - Mariners Cove

June 9, 2024

8:00 am

Kamilonui Valley/Mariners Cove needs your kо̄kua! Join your neighbors, LHKH, and Hawaii Kai Strong as we maintain the firebreak located near the Mariners Cove sign.

Kamilonui Valley/Mariners Cove is Oʻahu's first (and to date only) Firewise Community. After a particularly devastating series of fires in 2017, the community knew it had to get proactive about fire prevention, specifically by creating firebreaks and engaging with the entire neighborhood about the importance of depriving fires from fuel, whether that be up on the mountains or around our homes.

The Hui, through Aloha 'Āina 'O Kamilo Nui, co-leads O'ahu's first Firewise Community along with disaster readiness group Hawaii Kai Strong. Firewise focuses on proactive measures to prevent and reduce the impact of wildfires. While community participation is encouraged home-by-home, we also organize community-wide volunteer days to maintain firebreaks at the entrance of Mariner's Cove and behind the Kamilonui Valley agricultural lands.
